Yuanyuan has an impressive ability to manage her time, working 8 hours a week at the library and tutoring middle school students, as well as volunteering 4 hours a week, both with Yanxing and other various organizations. She is very motivated by wanting to help her family. Both her parents are farmers, but have serious medical problems, so cannot do much work. Unfortunately, her younger brother was burned in the face in an accident, causing her family to fall into debt. Through her many part-time jobs, she has become financially independent. With the scholarship, she would not need to work so much: “Then I will put my energy and time more on my study and research. More importantly, I could take out a part from the money to cover my study and research. If I were fortunate enough, maybe I could to take a long journey."
She loves physics and currently ranks number 8 of 144 students in her departments. She also manages to participate in various competitions on a regular basis. During the summer of 2015, she organized a week-long “Science and Technology summer camp” in Mongolia, helping with administration and marketing, as well as teaching chemistry in the classroom. Long-term, she wants to become an engineer and work in the energy sector. She also wants to study abroad and learn advanced technologies while experiencing different cultures. She learns some courses in her first grad year. During the struggling of the first year, she found her interest in fluid measurement technique and also realized that she still want to go abroad for further study. So the next step is prepared for it. In order to stay healthy enough to handle all her responsibilities, she likes to jog 1-2 km every night, a habit she started in high school to relax between study sessions. She also likes to pay table tennis and cycle. “The most important thing is that all of the scholars are motivated and do very excellent work in their study or working field, which inspires me a lot with courage and faith towards life. My horizon has been broadened since I was part of the Scholarship. I have seen some other things, like the cool experience of mentors (or the invited speaker in the video meeting) and their attitude towards life, in QZMS community. That leads me to think about my future plan and career goals. Also the excellent scholars or alumnae gives me much courage to pursue my goals. Another thing is that QZMS gives us some really valuable opportunity on personal development. And as a member of QZMS, I have made some progress on professional skills. If I were not part of the Scholarship, I may not pay some attention on personal development. And I may not look professional and still be scared of speaking in front of people. Though I am scared of speaking in front of people now, I have an awareness of [the importance of getting] out of the comfort zone.” Advice: “1. Be confident when communicate with the interviewer; 2. It is worth to apply whether you can be admitted or not, because you can improve a lot during the application process and can be reminded to think about your career goal and future plan which is important for you to have a fulfilling university life.” |
