ZHANG Qian was born in a small village in the mountain area. When she was born, her parents had to work away from home to support the family, and so she lived with her grandmother. When she was in the fourth grade, her parents came back and ran a laundry shop in her hometown. She is the oldest sibling and has a younger brother.
She studied hard to live up to her parents’ expectations, and surprising to her, she was admitted by Hohai University, where she majors in Hydrology. Because floods happen frequently in her hometown, she chose her major to try her best to make a contribution to flood disaster in China. Besides, she likes physics, chemistry, and engineering very much, which are all important in her studies. In college, she learned that floods happen often in China, especially in the summer season. In July 2021, Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan Province, was hit by torrential rain, resulting in a serious flood disaster. Her background and the recent tragedies have motivated her to become qualified to reduce damage from natural disasters in future. She wants to be an engineer designing high-quality urban drainage pipe networks to reduce the impact of such disasters. |
