Our scholars are chosen from the Yanxing China program, which helps develop undergraduate students from low-income families in China into well-rounded young adults.
Yanxing China 雁行中国 (百度百科) Yan(雁) means wild goose in Chinese and the name Yanxing (雁行) implies flying in formation as a gaggle of geese do. Participants in the program are affectionately called little geese(小雁), alumni big geese(大雁) and management/donors leading geese(老雁). The charity was founded in 2003 by EMBA students from Peking University and has since expanded its reach to 10 top universities in Beijing and Nanjing, as well as one high school. The Yanxing program selects its 320 new “little geese” every year based on financial need and academic achievement in all fields of study. The fast alumni network spans many other cities around Beijing and around the world. Watch the video introduction here. Beyond financial assistance in their freshman year, the “little geese” gain the invaluable opportunity to participate in the many activities organized on their campuses, in their cities and trips beyond. The most popular activities are the annual spring team-building trips and the various Inspiring Speech trips to high schools, where Yanxing members share their own experiences of gaining admissions to and excelling at a top university. Each participating Yanxing university sends two representatives to the Executive Committee, which sets the strategy, publishes its quarterly report, organizes activities and builds the Yanxing communities on their respective campuses. In addition to having a close-knit, highly supportive community away from home, the Yanxing members train their organizational, leadership, teamwork and public speaking skills. Yin met York, the founding CEO of Yanxing, in 2009 while working in Beijing and quickly joined the Yanxing family as a donor. In her capacity as the founder of the Boston Consulting Group Greater China’s Social Impact Team, Yin set up a mentorship program between Yanxing and BCG’s Beijing office and decided to build her scholarship for female STEM majors on the solid foundation of Yanxing’s organization. Yin is extremely grateful for the overwhelming support Yanxing’s leadership and members have provided for the Qian Zheng Memorial Scholarship. "The Qian Zheng Memorial Scholarship is dedicated to female students majoring in science and technology, who are from the disadvantaged areas of China. Though the students are already admitted in the top universities in China, these young ladies are still considered a "minority" in these schools when it comes to all kinds of student benefits. We are very happy to see that The Qian Zheng Memorial Scholarship makes a strong statement in providing resources to these deserving Scholars. Working with Yin Yin, we have been very impressed with her team's dedication, passion and systematic approach. They have demonstrated how professional practices can contribute today's Chinese NGO system." -Estela Kuo, Current CEO of Yanxing “Yin has been a contributing 老雁 (Leading Goose) since 2009. She joined Yanxing activities, making friends with 小雁 (Little Geese) and providing advice and recommendations to them in their campus life and future career. Yin also helped establish our still on-going mentorship program between her former employer BCG Beijing and Yanxing. Those selected Little Geese from universities are benefiting from the personalized mentoring by BCG professionals. And, from 2010, in honor of her mother, Yin further donated the Qian Zheng Memorial Scholarship to Yanxing’s female engineering students. The scholarship, onto its fourth year, is well sought after by eligible Little Geese. I am happy to see those recipients are really outstanding and meeting the Scholarship’s objective in “societal progress, academic excellence and global thinking”. -York Chen, Founding CEO of Yanxing |
