Yanxia is currently a PhD student at ETH Zurich. Her journey began in a small town in Inner Mongolia, where she grew up in a low-income family. Despite her family's financial struggles and her parents' constant absence due to work, Yanxia's determination and hard work propelled her to excel academically.
Yanxia's passion for going beyond her small town led her to pursue her studies alone at an outstanding senior high school in another city. She later attended Nanjing University and pursued her dream of studying Materials Science, as she was fascinated by the ways in which materials are closely connected to daily life and serve as important foundations for many other fields. It was at that time that she received the Qian Zheng Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship not only helped to alleviate the financial burden on her parents but also provided her with opportunities to attend workshops and talk to mentors from different backgrounds. These experiences broadened her perspectives and helped her personal and academic development. After obtaining her bachelor’s degree, Yanxia pursued her master's degree at ETH Zurich. During her master’s studies, she discovered her passion for soft materials, which motivated her to continue her research in the field as a PhD student. Throughout her academic journey, Yanxia never forgot her roots and how the Qian Zheng Memorial Scholarship helped her. Yanxia decided to give back by volunteering for the Qian Zheng Memorial Scholarship organization and helping to mentor and support other young girls like herself. |
